Saving The Ozone Layer - Adebola Daniel

ozone

Following the discovery in January 1975 by Rowland Sharwood and Mario Molina
that the CFCs(Chlorofluorocarbons) released from aerosol sprays are the major culprit of ozone depletion , countries in the world signed the world biggest treaty in 26th August 1987. The treaty known as Montreal Protocol was to completely stop the use or production of Ozone depleting substances worldwide. That was in agreement with the proposition made by EPA in 1986 that people and industries should start using alternatives to CFCs for ten years phase out.

Following the drastic global reduction in the use of ozone depleting substances, the ozone layer is steadily repairing itself and the UN's environmental agency has proposed that hopefully the ozone layer will be completely healed by 2060s.

However, in order to save the ozone layer and help in its rapid resuscitation,
individuals and industries must loyally make use of CFC-replacement substances which include Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs).  The use of these greener (more environmentally friendly) substances is the only way in which the ozone layer can be saved from returning back to its originally depleted condition.

Government should not cease to educate people concerning the need to reduce the use/release of non environmentally friendly substances which pose major threats to the environment as most of these substances (e.g perfluoro alkyl substances also known as PFAs) are forever  chemicals. They accumulate  and pose a lot of dangers to the atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere as well as the biosphere.
