Coca Cola launches a bottle made from 100% plant-based plastic

Image
By: Shofu Babalola The Coca‑Cola Company’s sustainable packaging journey crosses a major milestone this week with the unveiling of its first-ever beverage bottle made from 100% plant-based plastic, excluding the cap and label, that has been made using technologies that are ready for commercial scale. The prototype bottle comes more than a decade after the company’s PlantBottle™ debuted as the world’s first recyclable PET plastic bottle made with up to 30% plant-based material. A limited run of approximately 900 of the prototype bottles have been produced. The newly unveiled plant-based bottle arrives more than a decade after the company first introduced its so-called Plant-Bottle, consisting of recyclable.   PET, the world’s most recycled plastic, comprises two molecules: approximately 30% monoethylene glycol (MEG) and 70% terephthalic acid (PTA). The original PlantBottle™, introduced in 2009, includes MEG from sugarcane, but the PTA has been from oil-based sources...

A Journey With Oxygen- Onireti Esther

Image
I  , hydrogen journey to the atmosphere with oxygen today.  I live on the surface of the earth, but I have family members who live in the sun, the stars and even Jupiter. Oxygen and I make ourselves gaseous for this journey. We are affected by temperature, humidity, wind speed and solar radiation, and though all of these try to break us, we stand stronger and transform better into a combined gaseous state.  From the oceans we journey,  from the soil we journey, from the snow and even the ice we journey, day and night, we journey. Though I can travel with nitrogen, halogens, and yes carbon! oxygen is my favorite companion.  With oxygen I exist abundantly. Oh my readers, don't get lost, I and oxygen journey to form rain. Our journey brings you that scent of fresh storm, and our delicious feel dripping down your skin makes you want to stretch your arms to the sky happily Chem-preneur We come down from the sky soft as we do not contain salts, minerals, and we haven'...

Saving The Ozone Layer - Adebola Daniel

Image
Following the discovery in January 1975 by Rowland Sharwood and Mario Molina that the CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons ) released from aerosol sprays are the major culprit of ozone depletion  , countries in the world signed the world biggest treaty in 26th August 1987. The treaty known as Montreal Protocol was to completely stop the use or production of Ozone depleting substances worldwide. That was in agreement with the proposition made by  EPA i n 1986 that people and industries should start using alternatives to CFCs for ten years phase out.     Following the drastic global reduction in the use of ozone depleting substances, the ozone layer is steadily repairing itself and the UN's environmental agency has proposed that hopefully the ozone layer will be completely healed by 2060s. However, in order to save the ozone layer and help in its rapid resuscitation, individuals and industries must loyally make use of CFC-replacement substances which inc...

CHEMISTRY STORY:HOW MANY HYDROGENS ARE THERE ON EARTH!

Image
The Nobel Prize is the highest award to a scientist. There are and have been very many scientists in the world, but just over a hundred of them have been awarded the Nobel Prize and they received it for the most outstanding discoveries. Three of the Nobel Prizemen for 1932 were Murphy, Urey and Brickwedde. It was thought previously that there was only one hydrogen on Earth, that with an atomic weight of one. Murphy and his colleagues discovered a second hydrogen, twice as heavy. This was the hydrogen isotope having the atomic weight two. Isotopes are varieties of atoms with the same charge but different atomic weights. In other words, the nuclei of isotopic atoms contain an equal number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. Isotopes are known for all the chemical elements: some of them exist in nature: others have been obtained artificially by means of nuclear reactions. The hydrogen isotope whose nucleus is a bare proton is a bare proton is called protium and its s...

10 FACTS YOUR CHEMISTRY TEACHER MAY NEVER TELL YOU.

Image
In most cases, you shouldn't and must not expect your Chemistry teacher to teach you all you need to know in chemistry.  Most times, due to limited time and resources, The teacher will only teach you based on the syllabus and will not bother to explain some mysterious facts in chemistry to you.  Worst enough, some teachers strictly hide these facts because they just want to be above their students in terms of knowledge. Here are ten facts your Chemistry teacher may never tell you. 1. The word ALKALI is derived from the Arabic word ALQILI which means "plant ash." 2. Alkaline 'earth' metals are called so because the early alchemists believed that any element whose compounds are insoluble in 'water', unchanged by ' fire ' and unburnt in ' air ' is ' earth '. For example, Calcium has the compound Calcium oxide which possesses these properties. 3. ' Aldehyde ' literally mean ALcohol DEHYDrogEnated . 4. The word Pa...

Why Does Your Roof Turns Brown?- Adebola Daniel

Image
By: Adebola Daniel     Flying an aeroplane across Ibadan city, a pilot may begin to wonder about the heat, the dust and most especially the brown roofs on the dilapidated buildings. Children waving on the streets, waiting for gravity to pull him down. What really is the cause of the brown roofs? The answer is just ELECTROCHEMISTRY IN ACTION!     The gradual deterioration of metals by an electrochemical process is termed CORROSION. The shiny roofing sheets on your house is made of Iron which corrodes in the presence of oxygen and water. The corrosion of Iron is specifically called RUSTING. The reaction occuring is very complex, however, the main steps are explained below.      In the presence of oxygen and water, a region of the Iron sheet acts as anode (let the reader understand) where oxidation occurs. The electrons released are used to reduce atmospheric oxygen to water in another region of the metal which acts as the cathode....

A Letter From Chemistry

Image
By: Onireti Esther Dear Human,  I feel really shy writing to you,  My heart is hard like diamond and my hope of finding true love is darker than graphite, but now, my heart longs for you; I can't stop myself from looking for new methods to please you. But the sad part is; even when I involve myself in everything you love so as to get noticed by you you don't always notice me, you always perform chemical reactions without thinking about me. Do you hate to see my face? or have I become a norm to you? I am always there when you breathe, when you eat, when you lie to sleep, but you don't seem to know. You prefer Maths and Logic to me, you think they are more smarter than I am.  If only you knew, that Maths secretly comes to me for help, and Logic would never exist without me. I see how you look at Biology, you feel she is more beautiful, have you forgotten that I am her foundation? Isn't the rusting of iron, the slacking of lime, and the fermentation of substances chemical ...

Her Name Is Chemistry

Image
By:Iyanuoluwa Esther Onireti  It hurts to see her glowing eyes only through a glass,  deep in my heart I wish I could hold them with my hands. When the breeze brings her kisses to my lips, I wish I could feel them forever. Her presence is felt even in my sleep,  she consumes my body with her love. A little reaction like neutralization surprises me like magic, she gladdens my heart even when she reacts harshly. I can not hold my eyes from admiring her beauty, I find myself fantasising about her diamond skin.  Her shape is complex sometimes, but it is always gorgeous. She forms aromatic compounds to make me love her even more. When my demand for food increases, she provides urea, calcium nitrate, ammonium nitrate, sodium nitrate, ammonium sulphate and superphosphate, to meet my demands. She preserves my food with her gentle hands, and form insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides, just to make me happy. Her perfume softens my heart, and her body is pillow to my head. S...

CHEMISTRY SPEAKS: Why Do You Cry While Cutting Onions?- Daniel Adebola

Image
On a very special day, probably your birthday, have you ever wondered why your joy turns to tears in the kitchen? You've decided to fry your eggs with slices of onions, but cutting the onions make you cry. Then you ask yourself; Why do onions make me cry? The answer is just CHEMISTRY IN ACTION.  Onion as a vegetable, has a defense mechanism. It produces an irritating chemical substance known as Propanethial-S-oxide which prevents the onions from being eaten by pests. This substance is what is known as LACHRYMATORY FACTOR   When  you cut an onion, this sulphur gas evaporates and rises to your eyes. It dissolved in the water covering the surface of your eyes to form SULFENIC ACID. However, since the amount of this acid produced is relatively small, it's effect is usually not harmful but only irritating. The  Sulfenic acid irritates your lachrymal gland (also called tear gland) which produces tears which is actually meant to wash away the Sulfenic acid. However, to pre...

How to make your own hand-sanitizer- Simple and easy

Image
By: Farouq Tobi One of the major preventive measure of the the ravaging virus is WASHING OUR HANDS FREQUENTLY,and yeah the trader will surely want to profit from this by hiking the price of hand Sanitizer. Why can't you try to make your own Hand Sanitizer? Even you can turn this into a thriving business. How It Works The active ingredient in this hand sanitizer recipe is the alcohol, which needs to comprise at least 60% of the product in order to be an effective disinfectant. The recipe calls for 99% isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) or ethanol (grain alcohol, most commonly available at 90%-95%). Please don't use any other types of alcohol (e.g., methanol, butanol), as they are toxic. Also, if you use a product that contains a lower percentage of alcohol (e.g., 70% alcohol) then you need to increase the amount of alcohol in the recipe or it won't be as effective. Essential Oils in Hand Sanitizer In addition to adding fragrance to your hand sanitizer, the ess...

The Chemistry behind how hand washing with soap helps fight coronavirus- Pall thordarson

Image
Hand washing.  By: Shofu Babalola Theophilus Washing your hands with soap is one of the simplest and most effective ways of killing off any viruses you may have come into contact with. Alcohol-based disinfectants are also effective, but soap is a highly efficient way of killing the virus when it’s on your skin. Viruses can be active outside the body for hours, even days. Disinfectants, liquids, wipes, gels and creams containing alcohol are all useful at getting rid of them – but they are not quite as good as normal soap. Soap is one of the most effective ways to get rid of COVID-19. It dissolves the fatty layer that coats coronaviruses. The RNA, proteins and lipids self-assemble to form the virus. The viral self-assembly is based on "non-covalent" interactions between the proteins, lipid and RNA. It difficult to split up the self-assembled viral particle but can be splitted by using soap and water. Most viruses, including the coronavirus, are between 50-200 n...

Know Your World War I Chemical Weapons.

Image
By: salami kehinde sahadat For more than 2000 years human has been using some chemicals as weapon at war front which are mostly gases. It is important to let you know that : Three substances were responsible for most chemical-weapons injuries and deaths during World War I: chlorine, phosgene, and mustard gas. 1. Chlorine gas:   used on the infamous day of April 22, 1915, produces a greenish-yellow cloud that smells of bleach and immediately irritates the eyes, nose, lungs, and throat of those exposed to it. At high enough doses it kills by asphyxiation. 2. Phosgene:  smells like moldy hay, is also an irritant but six times more deadly than chlorine gas. Phosgene is also a much stealthier weapon: it’s colorless, and soldiers did not at first know they had received a fatal dose. After a day or two, victims’ lungs would fill with fluid, and they would slowly suffocate in an agonizing death. Although the Germans were the first to use phosgene on the battlefield, i...

CHEMISTRY ALL AROUND US!

Image
Chemistry around us. BY:Ahmed Saidat olajumoke. Ever  wonder why  chemistry is so important? Let me give you ten important thing you should know about chemistry.    1. CHEMISTRY IS THE STUDY OF MATTER AND ENERGY Chemistry, like physics,is a physical science that  explores the structure of matter and energy and the way the two interact with each other. The basic buiding block of matter are atoms, which join together  to form molecules where atoms and molecules interact together to form new product through chemical reaction. 2. CHEMISTS USES THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD Chemists and other scientists ask and answer questions about the world in a very specific way:the scientific method. This system helps scientists design experiments, analyze data and arrive at an objective conclusion. 3. CHEMISTRY HAVE VARIOUS BRANCHES Think of chemistry as a tree with many branches, because the subject is so vast and its different branches has its own focus. 4. THE ...

15 Amazing chemistry facts, you don't want to miss!!

Image
BY: Salami kehinde As you all know chemistry is full of amazing discoveries relating to our day to day activities in one way or the other. Did you know?   some fun , interesting and overlooked facts of the fascinating science of chemistry. Chemistry is a fascinating subject full of unusual trivia, facts, and stats. Here are a few of the amazing ones. 1.      Glass is actually a liquid, it just flows very, very slowly. Being neither liquid, nor solid, explaining glass is a lot harder than some might think. In a glass, molecules still flow, but at a very low rate that it’s barely perceptible. As such, it’s not enough to class glasses as a liquid, but neither as a solid. Instead, chemists classify glasses as amorphous solids— a state somewhere between those two states of matter. There’s also a thing called metal glass – a class of materials that are three times stronger than titanium and have the elastic modulus of bone, all while being ex...
